Gokul Rajaram is an Indian-American technology executive, investor, and board director best known for his leadership roles in some of the most influential internet and software companies of the 21st century, including Google, Meta, Block, and DoorDash.[1] Often referred to in technology circles as the “Godfather of AdSense,” Rajaram played a central role in building and scaling Google AdSense into one of the company’s foundational revenue platforms.[2]

Over the course of his career, Rajaram has held senior product and operational leadership positions at Google, Facebook (now Meta), Block (formerly Square), and DoorDash, while also serving on the boards of major public technology companies including Coinbase, Pinterest, and The Trade Desk.[3][4] He is also an active angel investor and advisor to startups across artificial intelligence, fintech, SaaS, and crypto infrastructure.[5]

Early life and education

Gokul Rajaram was born in India and studied computer science engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur).[6] During his time at IIT Kanpur, he received the President’s Gold Medal for graduating as the valedictorian of his class.[7]

Following IIT Kanpur, Rajaram moved to the United States to pursue graduate education. He earned a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin, where he received the MCD University Fellowship.[8] He later completed an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.[9]

Career

Google and AdSense

Rajaram joined Google in the early 2000s and became one of the foundational product leaders behind Google AdSense.[10] At Google, he served as Product Management Director for AdSense and helped transform the platform into a major component of Google's advertising business.[11]

AdSense became one of the most commercially successful digital advertising products in internet history, enabling publishers across the web to monetize content through contextual advertising.[12] Rajaram has frequently been credited by founders and investors for shaping product-led monetization strategies during the formative years of online advertising.[13]

Chai Labs and Facebook

After leaving Google, Rajaram founded Chai Labs, a natural language processing startup focused on semantic technologies.[14] The company was later acquired by Facebook.[15]

Following the acquisition, Rajaram joined Facebook as Product Director of Ads.[16] In that role, he helped Facebook transition its advertising business from desktop-centric monetization toward a mobile-first advertising ecosystem during a critical growth phase.[17]

During his tenure, Facebook’s advertising revenues grew substantially as mobile advertising became central to the company’s business model.[18]

Block (Square)

Rajaram joined Square, later renamed Block, in 2013.[19] At Block, he led several product development and engineering organizations and served on the executive team.[20]

His work at Block focused on payments, commerce infrastructure, seller tools, and financial technology products designed for small businesses and independent merchants.[21]

DoorDash

Rajaram later joined DoorDash, where he served on the executive team and led Caviar, DoorDash’s premium food-ordering and delivery platform.[22] He also oversaw corporate development and strategy initiatives within the company.[23]

His tenure at DoorDash coincided with a period of rapid growth for the company and the broader on-demand delivery sector.[24]

Rajaram became widely known in Silicon Valley as an operator-investor, advising founders on product strategy, monetization, scaling, and marketplace design.[25]
