Tesla, Inc. is an American electric vehicle and clean energy company headquartered in Austin, Texas. Founded in 2003 as Tesla Motors, the company became one of the most influential manufacturers in the global electric vehicle industry through its development of battery-electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and solar energy products.[1] The company is widely associated with CEO Elon Musk, who joined Tesla as an early investor and later became chief executive officer in 2008 during a critical restructuring period.[2]

Tesla’s strategy centered on accelerating the transition from internal combustion vehicles to sustainable transportation by initially targeting the premium automotive segment before expanding into mass-market electric vehicles.[3] Over time, the company expanded beyond automobiles into renewable energy generation, battery storage infrastructure, autonomous driving software, and artificial intelligence technologies.[4]

History

Founding and Early Development

Tesla Motors was incorporated on July 1, 2003, by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in San Carlos, California.[5] The company was named after inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla.[6]

The founders sought to demonstrate that electric vehicles could outperform gasoline-powered cars in both performance and efficiency.[7] Elon Musk joined the company in 2004 as lead investor in Tesla’s Series A financing round and became chairman of the board.[8] J.B. Straubel and Ian Wright later joined the company’s leadership team, and all five individuals were formally recognized as co-founders following a 2009 legal settlement.[9]

Roadster Era

Tesla introduced its first production vehicle, the Tesla Roadster, in 2008.[10] The Roadster was notable for being the first highway-legal production electric car to use lithium-ion battery cells and for achieving substantially greater range than earlier electric vehicles.[11]

Although the company faced severe financial difficulties during the 2008 global financial crisis, Tesla secured emergency funding and avoided bankruptcy.[12] Elon Musk assumed the role of chief executive officer during this period.[13]

Expansion and Mass-Market Growth

Tesla expanded its vehicle lineup with the launch of the Model S luxury sedan in 2012.[14] The Model S received significant industry recognition for its performance, battery range, and software-centered design.[15]

Subsequent vehicles included the Model X sport utility vehicle, the Model 3 sedan, the Model Y crossover, and the Cybertruck pickup.[16] The Model 3 and Model Y became central to Tesla’s mass-market strategy and global production growth.[17]

Tesla also developed large-scale manufacturing facilities known as Gigafactories to support battery production and vehicle assembly.[18]

Business Operations

Automotive Division

Tesla designs and manufactures battery-electric vehicles, vehicle software systems, and autonomous driving technologies.[19] The company vertically integrates significant portions of its manufacturing, battery development, software engineering, and charging infrastructure operations.[20]

Tesla operates a proprietary fast-charging network known as the Supercharger network, supporting long-distance electric vehicle travel in multiple international markets.[21]

Energy Division

Tesla Energy was formally introduced in 2015 to expand the company’s activities into renewable energy generation and storage.[22] The division develops products including Powerwall residential batteries, Megapack utility-scale storage systems, solar panels, and Solar Roof systems.[23]

Tesla acquired SolarCity in 2016 in a transaction intended to integrate solar generation with battery storage and electric transportation products.[24]

Technology and Innovation

Tesla became known for integrating software-driven functionality into vehicles through over-the-air updates, advanced battery systems, and driver-assistance technologies.[25] The company invested heavily in artificial intelligence, autonomous driving systems, robotics, and energy optimization software.[26]

Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems attracted substantial public attention as well as regulatory and safety scrutiny.[27]

Global Presence

Tesla operates manufacturing, engineering, and sales operations across North America, Europe, and Asia.[28] The company established production facilities in the United States, China, and Germany to support international demand.[29]

In 2025, Tesla formally expanded its retail presence in India by opening its first showroom in Mumbai after years of policy discussions and market negotiations.[30]

Corporate Identity and Influence

Tesla is widely credited with accelerating mainstream adoption of electric vehicles and influencing legacy automakers to increase investment in battery-electric transportation.[31] The company also contributed to broader investment in renewable energy infrastructure and energy storage technologies.[32]

Despite commercial success and strong market influence, Tesla has also faced criticism related to production challenges, labor practices, executive governance, product safety concerns, and regulatory disputes.[33]
