Sundar Pichai, born Pichai Sundararajan on June 10, 1972, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, grew up in a middle-class household in Chennai.[1] His father worked as an electrical engineer at General Electric Company, which exposed him early to technology and engineering concepts.[2]
He earned a degree in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.[3] He later obtained a Master of Science in materials science and engineering from Stanford University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was named a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar.[4]
Career Beginnings
Before joining Google, Pichai worked in engineering and product management roles at Applied Materials and later at McKinsey & Company.[5] These roles helped him develop expertise in both technical systems and business strategy.
Rise at Google
Pichai joined Google in 2004, where he initially worked on the Google Toolbar and played a key role in the development of the Google Chrome web browser.[6] Chrome went on to become the world’s most widely used web browser.
He subsequently led product management and innovation efforts for several major Google products, including Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Drive.[7] His leadership expanded further when he took charge of Android, the world’s most widely used mobile operating system.[8]
Chief Executive Leadership
In August 2015, Sundar Pichai was appointed CEO of Google as part of a corporate restructuring that created Alphabet Inc. as the parent company.[9] In December 2019, he also became CEO of Alphabet Inc., consolidating leadership across both entities.[10]
As CEO, Pichai has overseen Google’s continued focus on artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and hardware products, while navigating regulatory scrutiny and global expansion challenges.[11]
