Nikesh Arora
Nikesh Arora (born 9 February 1968) is an Indian-American business executive and investor best known for serving as the chairman and chief executive officer of Palo Alto Networks, one of the world’s largest cybersecurity companies.[1] Over the course of his career, he has held senior leadership positions at Google, SoftBank Group, Deutsche Telekom, and Fidelity Investments, becoming one of the highest-paid technology executives globally during the 2010s.[2]
Arora gained international prominence during his decade-long tenure at Google, where he rose to become Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer, overseeing global sales operations, partnerships, and business development.[3] He later joined SoftBank Group as President and Chief Operating Officer under Masayoshi Son before taking leadership of Palo Alto Networks in 2018, where he led the company’s expansion into platform-based cybersecurity and artificial intelligence-driven enterprise security.[4]
Early life and education
Nikesh Arora was born on 9 February 1968 in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, into a Punjabi family associated with the Indian Air Force.[5] His father served as an officer in the Indian Air Force, and Arora spent much of his childhood in military environments across India.[6]
He attended The Air Force School in Subroto Park, New Delhi.[7] In 1989, he graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi, with a Bachelor of Technology degree in electrical engineering.[8]
Following a brief professional stint in India, Arora moved to the United States for higher studies.[9] He earned a Master of Science degree in finance from Boston College and later completed an MBA from Northeastern University.[10] He also obtained the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.[11]
Career
Early career
Arora began his professional career at Fidelity Investments in 1992, where he held multiple finance and technology management positions.[12] During his tenure, he worked within Fidelity Technologies and advanced to the position of vice president of finance.[13]
He subsequently worked at Putnam Investments and later joined Deutsche Telekom.[14]
T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom
In 2000, Arora founded T-Motion PLC, a mobile services subsidiary associated with Deutsche Telekom.[15] The company later became integrated into T-Mobile International operations.[16]
From 2001 to 2004, Arora served as Chief Marketing Officer of T-Mobile International, where he focused on wireless data services and international mobile strategy.[17]
Arora joined Google in 2004 during the company’s early global expansion phase.[18] He initially served as Vice President of European Operations before becoming President of Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).[19]
Between 2009 and 2010, he became President of Global Sales Operations and Business Development, eventually rising to the role of Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer.[20] In that role, he oversaw Google's global advertising revenue operations, strategic partnerships, and commercial growth initiatives.[21]
During his tenure at Google, Arora became one of the company’s highest-compensated executives.[22] He played a major role in scaling Google's international advertising business and expanding relationships with telecommunications operators, enterprise partners, and mobile ecosystems.[23]
Arora resigned from Google in July 2014 after nearly a decade at the company.[24]
SoftBank Group
In 2014, Arora joined SoftBank Group as Vice Chairman, President, and Chief Operating Officer under founder Masayoshi Son.[25] He was widely viewed as a potential successor to Son and became responsible for SoftBank’s global investment and internet business strategy.[26]
During his time at SoftBank, the company significantly expanded investments in global technology startups and internet platforms.[27] His compensation package exceeded US$200 million over his tenure, setting records in Japanese corporate executive pay at the time.[28]
Arora departed SoftBank in 2016 after approximately two years with the company.[29]
Palo Alto Networks
On 1 June 2018, Arora became chairman and chief executive officer of Palo Alto Networks.[30] His appointment marked a strategic transition for the cybersecurity company toward large-scale platform integration, cloud security, and AI-driven enterprise protection.[31]
Under Arora’s leadership, Palo Alto Networks expanded aggressively through acquisitions and platform consolidation strategies.[32] The company increased its focus on cloud-native security, zero-trust architecture, and AI-assisted cybersecurity systems.[33]
Arora frequently advocated for “platformization” in cybersecurity, encouraging enterprises to consolidate fragmented security products into integrated ecosystems.[34]
During his tenure, Palo Alto Networks experienced substantial growth in market capitalization and revenue.[35] In 2023, Arora became one of the highest-paid CEOs in the United States based on equity and compensation disclosures.[36]
Arora also emerged as a prominent voice on artificial intelligence and cybersecurity policy, publicly discussing the relationship between AI adoption, workforce transformation, and digital security.[37]
Board memberships and affiliations
Arora has served on the boards of several multinational corporations and institutions.[38] He has been associated with organizations including Colgate-Palmolive, Yahoo! Japan, Sprint Corporation, and Uber Technologies.[39]
He has also acted as a senior advisor to Silver Lake Partners and served as a trustee of The Paley Center for Media.[40]

Arora is regarded as one of the most influential Indian-origin executives in the global technology industry.[41] His leadership style has often been characterized by operational scale, aggressive execution, and strategic acquisitions.[42]

Personal life
Arora is married to Ayesha Thapar, a member of the Thapar business family in India.[44] He has children from his marriages and has primarily resided in the United States during his executive career.[45]
According to Forbes and Bloomberg wealth estimates, Arora became a billionaire through compensation packages, stock ownership, and technology-sector investments.[46]
